Motorcycle Insurance
- Protection for driver and rider
- Covers your motorcycle and your liability exposure
- Special coverage endorsements may be available
Motorcycle Insurance is designed to offer protection for the motorcycle driver and rider as well as overall property protection. If you are thinking about purchasing a motorcycle, you will want to make sure you are going to be able to insure it and have a good understanding of how this type of insurance works. Motorcycle Insurance is required in most states; however, because of the high risk, it does not necessarily mean you will find an insurance company that is willing to insure you. Your coverage and even your ability to be covered depends upon variables such as your automobile driving record, your age, where you live and whether the motorcycle is owned or leased.
Coverage Options
There is a range of coverages available from liability, to comprehensive, to uninsured motorist. The three most common are:
- Liability Only
- Economy (Liability and Comprehensive/Theft)
- Full Package (Liability, Comprehensive/Theft and Collision)
Coverage is also available for Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist, Medical Coverage, Roadside Assistance, Custom Parts and Equipment and special policy options for Custom Bikes and Collector Bikes.
Types of coverage available under Motorcycle Insurance policies include:
- Liability - BI (Bodily Injury) & PD (Property Damage) - (Coverage for injury or damage that you cause to someone else)
- Guest Passenger Liability
- Medical Payments, Expenses and/or Benefits (Coverage for your injuries)
- Coverage for Injuries and Damages Caused by an Uninsured or Underinsured Driver
- Comprehensive & Collision
Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Coverage covers your legal liability for an accident where there is damage or injury to someone else up to the limit of liability you have selected. Your insurance company pays for the cost to replace or repair damaged property, the medical bills as well as the wage loss incurred by the person who is injured, and other damages you are legally obligated to pay as a result of the accident. Some states have special requirements for Guest Passenger Liability.
Guest Passenger Liability
This provides protection for legal liability in the event that the guest passenger is injured on the insured motorcycle.
Medical Payments, Expenses and/or Benefits (Coverage for Your Injuries)
Medical Payments Coverage covers the cost of medical care provided to you as a result of a motorcycle accident and applies regardless of who may be at fault. NOTE: this coverage is often limited to medical care you receive in the first three years after the accident and is often limited to a specific dollar amount. In some states, this coverage only applies after other medical insurance is exhausted.
Coverage for Injuries and Damages Caused by an Uninsured or Underinsured Driver
Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage pays for medical treatments, wage loss, and all other benefits you would have otherwise received from the other person's insurance company, had they been insured.
Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage is designed to cover the gap between the other person's liability limits and the liability limit for Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage that you select. (Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage covers damage to your vehicle caused by someone who does not have insurance.)
Comprehensive & Collision (Coverage for Damage to or Theft of Your Motorcycle)
Comprehensive and Collision Coverage covers the cost to repair or replace your motorcycle if it is damaged in an accident (regardless of who is at fault) or if it is stolen. You share in this cost by paying a deductible. Coverage is typically provided for factory equipment only. Special coverage endorsements may be provided for Custom Parts and Equipment, Custom Bikes and Collector Bikes. For more information on these special policy options, please refer to our FAQ section.
Collision Coverage
Your insurance company pays for damage caused when you collide with another vehicle or object.
Comprehensive Coverage
Your insurance company pays for damage caused by an event other than collision, such as fire, theft, or vandalism.
