Personal Auto Insurance FAQ
Is Automobile Insurance necessary?
Most states require that you purchase at least Automobile Liability Insurance. Automobile Liability Insurance covers claims from third parties involved in an accident caused by the insured's covered vehicle.
What if my vehicle is old and not worth much, do I still need to buy insurance?
This is dependant upon your State's Auto Insurance Laws. Contact your State's Department of Transportation or Insurance Company.
Who is covered while driving my vehicle?
Anyone you knowingly loan your car to with implied or explicit permission.
What should I do if I have an accident?
1. Stop your car, no matter how minor the accident may seem.
2. Call for an ambulance, if necessary.
3. Call the police.
4. Identify the other driver. Get his or her address, telephone number, insurance information and license plate number.
5. Get the names, addresses and telephone numbers from all witnesses.
6. Do not move any vehicles until the police have viewed the scene unless it is absolutely necessary and safe to do so.
7. If possible, take pictures or video camera footage of the accident scene - even if the vehicles have been moved. Pay particular attention to skid marks and damage to all vehicles involved.
8. Never admit to the police or anyone else on the scene that the accident was your fault. Anything you say to anyone can be used against you to defeat your claim for compensation.
9. Seek medical treatment as soon as possible. You may not be aware of the extent of your injuries immediately after the accident.
10. Inform your doctor that you were in an accident. Tell him about all of your complaints no matter how minor, including past injuries to the same body parts that are presently injured.
11. Notify your insurance company about the accident.
12. Never submit to any request for a statement by the other driver's insurance company. You are not legally obligated to give a statement. Such a statement could later be used against you. Simply refer them to your insurance company or lawyer for information.
13. As soon as possible after the accident, you should photograph/videotape from all angles any visible bodily injuries and any damage done to your car and turn it in to your insurance company. Your insurance company will take care of any other questions you may have.
