Supreme Court Rules Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Discrimination Violates Title VII

In a much anticipated decision issued on June 15, 2020, the US Supreme Court has ruled that Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act protects individuals against employment discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Supreme Court’s decision reverses federal court rulings that Title VII protections only apply to traditional notions of gender.
