Your Roadmap for an Auto Accident: A Step-by-Step Guide
February 4, 2025

At Robertson Ryan Insurance, we understand how unsettling an automobile accident can be. As your trusted agent, we’re here to guide you through the steps to protect yourself legally, financially, and emotionally. Follow this easy-to-remember guide with tips from the Insurance Information Institute, to ensure you’re equipped and confident in handling the unexpected.
Before an Accident: Be Prepared
- Keep Essentials Handy: Always have your insurance card, a pen and paper, and a phone.
- Know Your Policy: Familiarize yourself with what your insurance covers, including accident-related expenses and parts replacements.
Step-by-Step Guide After an Accident:
Immediately Following an Incident:
Notify Authorities
- Call the police or highway patrol to report the accident. Even if the other party suggests otherwise, filing an official report is important.
- If there is any concern of injury call 911 and seek medical attention immediately. It may be best to have a record of any injuries sustained for future reference.
- Request a copy of the police report for your records and future claims.
Document and Exchange Information
Gather as much detail as possible to streamline the claims process:
- Names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails of all drivers and passengers.
- Vehicle details: make, model, year, license plate, and vehicle identification numbers (VIN).
- Insurance details for all involved parties.
- Contact information of any witnesses.
- Take photographs before things move of:
- Damaged vehicles
- License plates
- The accident scene and surroundings
Handle Unattended Vehicles or Property
If the accident involves an unattended vehicle or property, leave a written notice with your contact details and accident information.
Once You Are Home and Recovered:
Notify Your Robertson Ryan Insurance Agent Immediately
- Call your agent and/or insurance carrier as soon as possible to report the claim. They will guide you through the forms and documentation needed. Many times, the insurance company will need you to report the claim to them directly.
- Keep records of all conversations, including dates, names, and details discussed.
Understanding How Insurance Companies Evaluate Your Claim
- When an insurance carrier evaluates your vehicle’s damage, they assess how much it will cost to repair your vehicle. Depending on your coverage, your carrier may reimburse you for those damages, after you reach your deductible.
- If the repair costs are estimated to be too high, or beyond the cost of your vehicle’s worth, they will deem your automobile as totaled. Again depending on the policy you have, the current market value for your vehicle, is what dictates your reimbursement.
Manage Expenses and Repairs
- Track all accident-related expenses, such as medical bills and vehicle repairs, for possible reimbursement.
- Before making repairs, confirm the type of parts being used (OEM or aftermarket), your policy may direct this.
- Choose a repair shop you trust— your insurance carrier will generally provide options.
Key Tips to Protect Yourself
- Don’t Admit Fault: Focus on sharing the facts, not opinions. Even if you believe you’re at fault, legal liability is determined after the insurance adjuster’s investigation. If you have comprehensive and collision coverage, your repairs may be covered regardless of fault. Leave the determination of liability to the authorities and your insurance company.
- Stay Calm and Collected: Avoid emotional decisions or making statements you may later regret.
- Seek Legal Counsel If Needed: If you’re unsure about your rights or feel pressured to provide a statement, consult an attorney to ensure you’re protected.
- Renew or ask your Agent to help remarket your auto insurance: Speak with your agent about renewing your policy or exploring other insurance options. Remember, you can switch auto insurance companies anytime, but you can’t purchase coverage after an accident has occurred to cover repair costs.
