Mitch Backes
Agent & Vice President
Mitch Backes began his career in the insurance industry immediately after college, starting as a risk consultant for an insurance carrier. In this role, he worked closely with clients to deliver safety training and manage safety programs, gaining a strong foundation in risk management and loss prevention. After several years, Mitch transitioned into insurance sales, where he was able to combine his technical expertise with a more strategic, client facing approach.
In 2008, Mitch joined Corkill Insurance Agency as an insurance advisor. Over the course of his tenure, he has played an integral role in the agency’s growth, contributing to its expansion through multiple mergers and serving as part of the management team that helped guide and scale the organization.
In 2009, Mitch helped lead the development of a specialized niche serving Fire Protection Districts. What began as a focused initiative evolved into a defining strength of the practice, ultimately positioning the team as one of the largest insurance providers for emergency service organizations. Mitch has found particular fulfillment in building long term relationships within the fire service community and supporting organizations that serve and protect others.
In recent years, Mitch and his team have shifted their approach from traditional transactional insurance placements to a more diagnostic, consultative model. By evaluating clients against top performing organizations and providing a strategic roadmap for improvement, they have been able to deliver more meaningful outcomes and elevate the overall client experience.
Mitch is known for his deep technical knowledge of insurance policies and claims, as well as his ability to guide clients through complex situations with clarity and confidence. His approach is grounded in education, strategy, and long term partnership.
Outside of his professional life, Mitch enjoys traveling with his family and exploring national parks across the country. He and his wife prioritize creating meaningful experiences with their teenage children, taking advantage of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, hike, and disconnect in places that offer both natural beauty and a sense of peace.
He is guided by a favorite quote from Mark Twain, “I never let my schooling interfere with my education,” which reflects his belief in continuous learning and real world experience.
