Winter Weather: Protect Your Home During Freezing Temps

As winter weather approaches, freezing temperatures, snow, and ice can pose serious risks to your home. From burst pipes to power outages, cold weather damage can be costly and disruptive, however with a little preparation, many of these issues are preventable.

At Robertson Ryan Insurance, the safety and peace of mind of our clients are always our top priorities. With winter conditions across most of the US expected this weekend and into next week, we encourage homeowners to take a few proactive steps now to help protect their property.

Prepare Your Home Before Temperatures Drop

One of the most important steps you can take is locating your home’s main water shut-off valve before freezing weather arrives. If a pipe freezes or bursts, shutting off the water quickly can help minimize damage. If your home has a fire sprinkler system, be sure to locate that shut off as well, as it is often separate from the main valve.

Setting your thermostat to at least 65°F is another critical precaution. To help warm air reach plumbing, open vanity and cabinet doors under sinks, especially those along exterior walls.

Protect Pipes and Prevent Freezing

Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter hazards. Watch for warning signs such as frost or condensation on exposed pipes, particularly in unheated areas like garages or attics. During extreme cold or power outages, allowing a faucet to drip slightly can help keep water moving through the pipes and reduce the risk of freezing. If you leave your home, be sure to turn the water off rather than leaving faucets running.

If your thermostat has wireless temperature sensors, placing them near exterior walls may help alert you to cold spots where warm air isn’t circulating effectively.

Watch for Snow-Related Risks

Heavy snowfall combined with fluctuating temperatures can increase the risk of ice dams, which may lead to roof leaks and interior water damage. After significant snowfall, consider having a professional clear your roof to help reduce this risk.

Plan for Power Outages

Winter storms often bring power interruptions. If you have a generator, make sure it’s fueled and in proper working condition so essential home systems can continue running. If you’ll be away from home during a storm, ask a neighbor or friend to periodically check on your property and report any concerns.
